Emergency & Inclement Weather Info

HCTC may close in the event of inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Severe weather, power outages, a water main break any of these situations can cause a full or partial closure of the college.

We make decisions regarding inclement weather as quickly as possible and with everyone s best interests in mind. However, while every effort is taken to quickly examine road conditions and weather data for our entire service area, we must also encourage your personal responsibility to keep yourself safe. To that end, if the college remains open or operates on a delay schedule, it is ultimately your own assessment and final decision about whether roads are safe in your area. If you miss all or part of a class or classes while the college is open, we will work with you to the best of our ability to make up the work. We trust that you will make conscientious decisions and be in class whenever it is safe and possible.

Incidents may occur that necessitate closing of the college at any time of the day and, sometimes, only a portion of a day s classes may be cancelled. The leadership team that makes the decision to cancel classes for an entire day will work with local media for a 6:00 a.m. announcement, for the sake of those who have a long commute to campus. However, with the unpredictability of any situation, this may not always be possible. Note: Some media outlets do not open at 6:00 a.m., so there may be media-specific delays beyond that time.

As soon as a decision is made about delaying or closing the college, the following communication procedure will be activated:

1. Information will immediately get posted on the HCTC website at https://hazard.kctcs.edu, on the front page.

2. College Public Relations staff will contact the media to announce the closing. Media outlets that will be contacted include:
