HCTC to offer evening LPN program
An evening Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program will begin during the fall semester at Hazard Community and Technical College. The deadline to register is April 1. The classes will be offered three nights a week – Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
HCTC President Dr. Jennifer Lindon said HCTC wants to be responsive to the needs of the region, and classes offered during the evenings are a way to achieve that goal. “We listened to what can work for our potential students. Since many are employed during the day, the evening training works best for them,” she said.
Another change involves the testing needed to be enrolled. Now HCTC is offering the National League for Nursing Pre-Admission Examination (NLN PAX), administered at both the Hazard Campus and Lees College Campus. An ACT score is still required to be on file with the college but the score does not influence admission to the program.
Christy Martin, nursing program coordinator, said she was very glad to see this change in the requirements because this test more aptly determines how successful a student will be in nursing.
Those interested in the program are invited to attend a pre-admission conference to learn about the process. These sessions are for those interested in the fall 2018 and spring 2019 classes.
The one-hour sessions at HCTC’s Technical Campus, in the Walter Prater Education Center (formerly NEB), room 114, are: Tuesday, Feb. 6, 5 p.m.; Tuesday, Feb. 20, 5 p.m.; Friday, March 2, 1 p.m.; Tuesday, March 13, 5 p.m.; and Tuesday, March 27, 5 p.m. The Technical Campus is located at 101 Vo-Tech Drive in Hazard.
The sessions scheduled for the Lees College Campus in Jackson, in the Multi-Purpose Room, are: Wednesday, Feb. 28, 1 p.m.; Wednesday, March 14, 1 p.m.; Wednesday, April 18, 1 p.m.; Wednesday, May 16, 1 p.m.
