Mavis Clemons is Human Services Coordinator

Mavis Clemons is the new Human Services Program Coordinator at Hazard Community and Technical College. She brings with her a change -- The program will be transitioned into a hybrid format in the coming semesters where students can have that in-person connection with the instructor and also complete some work online.  “Hybrid courses are very successful and help with students who have other commitments such as employment or a family.  Also, HCTC will continue to offer courses online to provide flexibility for all students,” noted Clemons.

“Education is the key to providing a better life for you and your family. Students should feel comfortable reaching out to instructors for assistance because our main goal is to ensure our students’ successes. The Human Services program is unique in that students can work with multiple populations who are vulnerable or marginalized in our communities today. We can make a difference in a person’s life,” Clemons observed.

Students will benefit from Clemons expertise garnered through her previous jobs. She has worked with multiple populations throughout the Eastern Kentucky area. She has mostly completed fieldwork where she worked with families and individuals in their homes. She has been teaching criminal justice and corrections classes since 2015 which has helped her to understand HCTC’s student population and the barriers that many students face.

Clemons previously was the Work and Learn Coordinator with the Ready to Work Program at HCTC. Prior to joining HCTC, Clemons was a School Based Clinician for Kentucky River Community Care for three years. She also was a Social Service Worker for the Department of Community Based Services in Paintsville.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in Corrections and Juvenile Justice, both from Eastern Kentucky University; she is currently attending Campbellsville University to further her education with Social Work. She graduated from Magoffin County High School in 1998.

Clemons is married to Stephen Clemons, self-employed business owner of AHC Computers in Hazard, and they have one son, Carson. The family lives in Hazard.
