Wilma Maggard is HCTC-KCTCS New Horizons Faculty award nominee

Cosmetology students give high praise to Wilma Maggard for her work in the classroom and that is one reason Hazard Community and Technical College has chosen to honor her with the KCTCS New Horizons Faculty Excellence award. She is the nominee for a statewide award.

A student commented, I believe in my heart that Wilma Maggard is the reason that I finished my first semester with a 4.0. Hazard Community and Technical College is very lucky to have her as one of their teachers as I am too.

Mrs. Maggard joined the HCTC faculty with 25 years of experience as a cosmetologist and ten years of experience as an instructor.

HCTC Interim President Dr. Juston Pate noted that Mrs. Maggard serves as the primary advisor for her cosmetology students, guiding them with a firm hand through the academic process. We appreciate her professionalism and her dedication to seeing that our students succeed, he said.

Tony Back, Division Chair for Occupational Technologies, praised Mrs. Maggard for her excellence. She goes above and beyond for students, while leading them with firm directions but at the same time listening to the students. She pushes them for improvement but is still caring and will listen when they need help. Her students truly know she wants them to better their career to help them and their family.

Mrs. Maggard has been a Licensed Cosmetologist since 1989 and a Licensed Cosmetology instructor since 2003. She has attended many professional trainings and classes directly related to cosmetology over the last few years as well as professional development activities through national companies, such as Paul Mitchell.

Mrs. Maggard enrolled in Cosmetology at the Technical Campus, completing the program in May 1989. She returned to earn her Apprentice Cosmetology Instructor certification, which she earned in spring 2003.
Her experience includes working for local salons and Karma Spa; she was a hairstylist at the JC Penney Salon for 14 years.

Teaching about the industry that I love and excites me is a dream come true, and teaching at HCTC has allowed me that opportunity. I appreciate all the opportunities that are a part of HCTC. The support system and the encouragement that I have received at HCTC has helped me to grow as a person and educator; they have helped me to be a better me, she said.

She lives in Krypton in Perry County with her husband, Arthur Maggard. She has two sons, Mark Leason, and Cory Leason; and enjoys being a grandmother.
