UCM makes it possible for Brittany to achieve dream

Brittany Coots is the new Family Support Worker for the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, and she was able to get that job after utilizing the services through the University Center of the Mountains (UCM) based at Hazard Community and Technical College s Hazard Campus on Ky. 15.

Coots graduated in December 2012 from Eastern Kentucky University with a bachelor s degree in Criminal Justice. She took her EKU classes at the UCM. Prior to that, she graduated from HCTC in May 2011 which she also said was a very positive learning environment for her, especially because of the friendly atmosphere.

The UCM helped me achieve my dreams even when I thought it wasn't possible. It gave me the opportunity to attend the college I dreamed of and stay at home. The faculty was very helpful. Anytime students needed anything they were always willing to assist, she said.

Had it not been for the UCM, I would not have been able to earn my degree from EKU. The Director for the University Center of the Mountains, Dr. Deronda C. Mobelini, commented on what a dynamic young lady Brittany is. She was always supportive of her classmates and engaged in various service activities through her EKU program. I am delighted that Brittany will continue to be an asset to our region in her new role as a Family Support Worker.

My college experience was amazing. I developed close friendships with my professors. I have memories that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. My education is one of the most important things in my life and I am forever grateful!

Coots is a 2008 Perry County Central High School graduate. She lives in Thousandsticks in Leslie County.
