Tierra Barnett is working toward her dream job

Tierra Barnett is glad she s enrolled in the Human Services program at Hazard Community and Technical College because she s on her way to fulfilling her dream job. When I start working, I would love to be a counselor for children. I feel that I do well with kids ages 12-18. My dream job would be to open my own practice in Eastern Kentucky, or to work at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

Tierra s educational goals include graduating from HCTC, earning a bachelor s degree in Social Work from UK, and then earning a master s degree.

After changing my major three times, I finally decided that Social Work was the career path for me so I started taking Human Services classes to work towards my goal. I have a desire to help people and make a difference in the community, she said.

In her Human Services classes, she has learned about the history of Social Work in America and all around the world. Besides that, I am learning how to make a difference in my community and ways that I can do my part in a professional manner. During my Human Services classes, I have learned about so many different resources in the community that I had no idea about before and I have heard many guest speakers, she said.

Cindy Plummer, Human Services Program coordinator, noted, Through the UK Social Work program taught in Hazard, students have the opportunity to continue their education and have a huge impact to alleviate the problems found in our area. Students who are from the mountains clearly see the solutions for solving problems in the mountains. Tierra is one of those students who will make a difference in the lives of our citizens.

Tierra would recommend others to enroll at HCTC. I chose HCTC because Hazard is the town I grew up in, which I love. I would love to say that I got my education at HCTC, and give back to the community that gave me so many opportunities. I think HCTC is a wonderful college and I've enjoyed every class and professor that I have had here.

She lives in Hazard and graduated from Perry County Central High School in 2013.
