Super Sunday is Feb. 12 at New Hope Church

Super Sunday is set for February 12 at 1 p.m. at New Hope Church. Super Sunday is an annual Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) statewide initiative intended to increase the college-going rate of students of color. Hazard Community and Technical College is coordinating the event, which will include a free lunch and information about college offerings.

Elbert Hagans, Director of Cultural Diversity, said all of the African American churches are invited to attend the event at New Hope. We hope that all come together on Sunday, February 12, because we have wonderful offerings for those who want to attend school. Our financial aid and scholarships, the large number of programs offered, and the convenience of enrolling are big attractions to HCTC, Hagans said.

This year, HCTC President Dr. Steve Greiner will make remarks at Consolidated Baptist Church; Vice President Doug Fraley will be part of the Town Mountain Baptist Church service; Elbert Hagans will attend the Common Bond Christian Fellowship church; and Tammy Duff, member of the HCTC planning committee, will speak at New Hope. All the speakers will encourage folks to attend the 1 p.m. event.

This is the second time Super Sunday has been offered. We want more African Americans to attend college and we believe we can start to reach out to them through the churches, Hagans said.

In the future, the Super Sunday event will be expanded to target students from other racial and ethnic groups, such as the emerging Latino population, as well as additional church partners.
