Sonography program accepting students for new class

HCTC has openings for its second class of Sonography students and Misty Kincer of Letcher County is one student who is glad she is part of the first class to graduate in December.

I enrolled in the Sonography Program because I have always had an intense interest in ultrasound. I wanted to be prepared and board certified before actually working in the field of sonography, Ms. Kincer said, adding she is pleased with her job prospects, including her chances of being a traveling ultrasound technologist.

I chose to enroll in HCTC Sonography Program because it is close to home and a smaller classroom environment. My classes are challenging at times but the small class size enables me to have more one on one time with my teacher, she said.

Sonography Program Coordinator Melissa Couch said she welcomes talking with others who may be interested in the program. Melissa Couch is very knowledgeable in the field of sonography. Melissa is always willing to help in any way she can, Ms. Kincer said.

I would definitely recommend this program to anyone interested in sonography. There is a need for registered sonographers because there are so few in this area and this program opens up opportunities for that, Ms. Kincer said.

Students wishing to enroll in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography must attend a pre-admission conference with the program coordinator and are chosen using a selective admission process. Once enrolled the program length is 18 months and includes classroom and clinical components in the specialty areas of abdominal, obstetrics/gynecology and vascular sonography.

The next pre-admission conference is set for Monday, Sept. 27, at 3:30 p.m. at the HCTC Technical Campus in the Devert Owens Building, room 114.
