New graphic arts program approved for HCTC

Hazard Community amp; Technical College will offer a new graphic arts program beginning in January. Students can enroll at HCTC now to begin an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Multimedia with options in Animation, Web Design, Digital Design, and Audio/Video.

Diplomas in the same areas, and certificates in Multimedia, Animation, Web Design, Digital Design, and Audio/Video are also planned. John Handshoe has been named the Program Coordinator/Instructor for the new program which will be housed in the newly renovated Telford Technology Center on the Lees College Campus (once construction is completed). HCTC has received many grants from the community to start this program and plans to utilize one of its two 3D Cubes at the facility.

The 63-66 credit hours in Multimedia provides students the skills necessary to prepare and produce multimedia presentations, websites, animations, and audio/video presentations.

HCTC President Dr. Steve Greiner noted that those with an artistic talent would be attracted to the program. Photographers who want their own web site would want to enroll in this class, as well as those interested in learning a trade where they can work from home, Dr. Greiner said.

Handshoe noted that employment of multimedia artists and related workers is expected to grow 12 percent through 2018, which is about as fast as the average for all occupations. Demand for multimedia artists and animators will increase as consumers continue to demand more realistic video games, movie and television special effects, and 3D animated movies. The HCTC program needs survey also revealed that local job opportunities are available, Handshoe noted.

HCTC received approval on Sept. 16 from the Kentucky Community and Technical College System to offer the program.
