New fine arts degree approved for HCTC

Hazard Community and Technical College received approval from the KCTCS Board of Regents to offer an Associate Degree in Fine Arts in Visual Arts and classes will be offered in the fall semester for those working toward the degree. The degree will encompass classes in ceramics, painting, digital photography, drawing, sculpture and printmaking. The courses will be offered at the Kentucky School of Craft and the Knott County Opportunity Center in Hindman, and also on the HCTC Hazard campus.

HCTC President Dr. Steve Greiner said the program will partner with existing community arts organizations and initiatives, focusing on student transfer to a four-year institution. We are in an area rich in the arts and we invite both traditional and non-traditional students to take advantage of this new degree offering that will capitalize on their talent.

Jeff Adams, director of HCTC s Kentucky School of Craft, noted, We will work to ensure that our students possess the ability to individually perform as visual artists and function as highly motivated learners who will excel as future arts professionals.
Adams stated, The AFA will serve to bring together both existing and emerging generations of artisans into a forum that would benefit the creative community of the region. As the singular two-year visual arts institution within Eastern Kentucky coal country, the degree will promote direct experiential production and encourage cognitive interaction within the practice of contemporary art.

HCTC is one of only two such programs in the state, with the other being its sister program at the Paducah School of Art at West Kentucky Community and Technical College.
