Mock emergency event set for Wednesday
In an effort to test HCTC s preparedness for emergency situations, HCTC will hold a mock shooter on campus exercise on Wednesday, April 18, in the afternoon. We are just testing ourselves. We want to see how long it takes us to get the calls in for our emergency notification system, to the police, and to make sure we follow procedures, noted Fred Landrum, who heads up the HCTC Crisis Management Team. We will have a debriefing afterwards so we can evaluate our communications, the police response, and our response to the emergency.
The mock event is planned for the Jolly Classroom Center on the Hazard Campus but all campus locations are evaluating how they would respond if a similar event was held.
The Hazard Police Department has been planning the event with HCTC and has discussed appropriate actions to be taken. We hope we never have to use the skills we learn in situations like this, but we want to be ready, Landrum said.
