Mavis Poe is new HCTC Work and Learn Coordinator
Mavis Poe loves her new job as the new Work and Learn Coordinator at Hazard Community
and Technical College. I think my new job is fulfilling because I am able to help
students who are trying to succeed and reach their goal of obtaining a GED, she said.
Having a GED can make it possible for students to attend college or apply for better
jobs so that they can provide for their selves and their families. Ms. Poe can also
provide students with career counseling, peer mentoring, life skills, and success
seminars.
She will work closely with the local adult education provider and the campus-based
Ready-to-Work Coordinator in program/curriculum design for specialized training initiatives.
She serves as the primary liaison between and among the KCTCS systems office Ready-to-Work
Program Coordinator, the campus-based Ready-to-Work Coordinator, the local adult education
provider, local and regional offices of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services,
and other local and regional partners that can facilitate and enhance KCTCS marketing,
recruitment and training initiatives for this KTAP GED/ABE population.
Ms. Poe, who began Nov. 11, noted, I really like the positive atmosphere of college
and how anytime you meet someone they were always willing to help. I also really enjoy
working with people and learning about their life. I want to help students be successful
in their future by obtaining their GED and transitioning onto college or the workforce.
This new job is a good fit for Ms. Poe. I love HCTC. Everyone has been so welcoming
and I have been included in all the events on campus. I love helping students reach
their goals. My supervisor and co-workers have been so supportive in helping me transition
into my new role. I am excited to see what the future holds for me at HCTC.
Dr. Jennifer Lindon, Occupational Technologies and Workforce Solutions Dean, noted,
HCTC is pleased to have Mavis Poe join our team. Her experience and education make
her an asset to the organization. We look forward to working with her.
Prior to joining HCTC, Ms. Poe was a School Based Clinician for Kentucky River Community
Care for three years. She also was a Social Service Worker for the Department of Community
Based Services in Paintsville.
She holds a bachelor s degree in Psychology and a master s degree in Corrections and
Juvenile Justice, both from Eastern Kentucky University. She graduated from Magoffin
County High School in 1998.
Ms. Poe is married to Stephen Clemons, self-employed business owner of AHC Computers
in Hazard, KY. The couple lives in Hazard.
