Janet Hurley retiring from HCTC

Janet Hurley is retiring from Hazard Community and Technical College after 27 years. Many of those years have involved seeing GED students accomplish their goals. As Chief Examiner, she delightedly saw students open up so many possibilities for their future by earning a GED. She also holds a special place in her heart for students succeeding as emergency medical technicians and paramedics. Those folks really make a difference in this region. I am still close to many of those folks after all these years, she said.

Janet s friends mean the most to her, including her co-workers who feel like family. At times, we have some rough things we d have to go through with each other, like when someone lost a family member. I found my co-workers to be a great comfort when I experienced death in my family. And on the lighter side, there would be funny experiences and conversations you d have with students and co-workers. I ve heard it all.

During her time at HCTC, she has seen how the college has expanded; there are more campuses in more locations. When I started, we had a location at the main campus and the old ARH Hospital Building. Now we have five locations in four counties. We have more offerings of classes, and we try to keep up with the technology, she said.

Dr. Jennifer Lindon, Academic Services Dean for Occupational Technologies and Workforce Solutions noted, Janet has been an asset to HCTC in her role as continuing education coordinator. In many ways, she has been a key link between HCTC and the community, reaching out to all age groups to extend the college's mission by providing personal enrichment courses, such as photography, dance, piano, guitar, kid's college, act prep, CPR, summer camps, and elder hostels. Not only has she coordinated personal enrichment courses, but also open enrollment workforce courses such as pharmacy tech and EMT. Janet's assets include her flexibility and organizational skills. Her smiling face and helpfulness to students will be greatly missed.
HCTC will always be near and dear to my heart, Janet said.

Janet is a 1983 graduate of Buckhorn High School. She holds a bachelor s degree from Morehead State University.

She will retire to her home in Chavies where she looks forward to spending time with family and friends.
