HCTC success story: Dr. Tiffany Herald

Dr. Tiffany HeraldDr. Tiffany Herald knows that attending Hazard Community and Technical College was the right move in her professional career. After graduating from Buckhorn High School in 1994, she opted to stay close to home for two years in Hazard before enrolling at the University of Kentucky.

At age 38, Dr. Herald is enjoying her challenging career as the Managed Care Pharmacist for Appalachian Regional Healthcare. She holds a doctorate level degree which qualified her for this system-wide position, working with ten hospitals and nine community pharmacies. Dr. Herald began in this new role in August 2014. Prior to that, she worked for ARH as a clinical pharmacist for 13 years where she implemented several clinical pharmacy programs to improve patient care and coordinated the implementation of a Post-Graduate Pharmacy Practice Residency Training Program.

I felt I was well prepared for UK, she said, noting she would recommend others to start their higher education in Hazard. I am thankful I had the opportunity to begin my college education at the Hazard Community and Technical College where I was given one-on-one attention and the time to mature in preparation for my post-graduate studies.

Education is what you make of it. The programs are here; the teachers were really dedicated to getting us prepared for what we wanted to do, she said.

Tiffany s older sister and younger brother also are HCTC success stories. Shannon (Herald) Combs is now a dually certified mental health and rural health family practice Advanced Practice Registered Nurse for Primary Care Centers of Eastern Kentucky. Her brother, Sean Bishop, graduated from the radiology program and is now the Interventional Radiology Chief Technologist at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington. My older sister s experience at the College also influenced my decision to attend. Staying close to home and taking advantage of the smaller class sizes were also important factors for me, she said.

Evidence of her success in college includes honors. She was on the Dean s List for each semester, inducted into the Rho Chi Pharmaceutical Honor Society in 2000, awarded the Ruth Davies Flaherty Service Award in 2000, and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2001.

In addition to her Doctor of Pharmacy degree, Dr. Herald has received certifications from the American Pharmacists Association in Immunization Delivery and Medication Therapy Management Delivery.

Her rewarding work now involves employee health. Smoking cessation, diabetes prevention, and helping those with other chronic diseases are her focus now. The program she develops will eventually be open to the general public.

In addition to leading the Children s Church program with her husband at New Hope Christian Center in Hazard, she has been involved in many service projects through both work and church. She arranged food drives at the hospital, assisted with fundraisers for Relay for Life and March of Dimes, and implemented the Rockin Autism Day Camp at Twin Rocks Bible Camp.

Her service extends to pharmacy organizations. She is active in the Kentucky Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. In 2012, she was one of 19 pharmacists in the state chosen by the dean of the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy to serve on the Advisory Board for the Center for the Advancement of Pharmacy Practice

Tiffany and her husband, Michael Herald, a pharmacist at ARH, live in Hazard with their two sons, Preston, 7 and Hudson, age 5.
