Nursing students learned about the rich heritage at Wendover, started by Mary Breckinridge
and the Frontier Nursing Service. Hazard Community and Technical College students
and faculty visited Leslie County on Wednesday, Oct. 5. Faculty members Lauren Bates
and Arzella Howard coordinated the visit for members of the Fundamentals of Nursing
class from the Lees College and Hazard campuses. Students toured Wendover, including
the Big House where Ms. Breckinridge resided. Students also got to see several nursing
artifacts and view photos depicting Ms. Breckinridge and the FNS couriers. After lunch
at the Big House, students were provided information about Frontier University. This
trip allowed HCTC students to appreciate the history of nursing right in their own
backyard, and also opened up discussion with some students about future plans in advanced
practice nursing after graduation.
