HCTC nursing grad praises teaching

Allison Bunn-Manning was 22 years old when her twin brother, Christopher Bunn was in a bad motorcycle accident and she vividly remembers him being hooked up to machines, near death. He recovered from the accident nicely. It was during that time he received great care that she decided she wanted to advance her nursing career. That experience changed my life, she said. She is a graduate of Hazard Community and Technical College s Nursing Program and is enjoying her career as a as a family nurse practitioner at Juniper Health in Breathitt County, a family practice health clinic.

She is a 2007 graduate and earned an associate of applied science and associate of applied arts degrees. Allison then earned a bachelor s degree through Eastern Kentucky University in 2010, utilizing the University Center of the Mountains located at HCTC s Hazard Campus. In 2012, she earned her master s degree (rural family nurse practitioner).

I loved my classes at HCTC. The classes were small with very good instructors. They were very knowledgeable and willing to help, she said.

I would recommend others to take the path I took. I was able to work while earning my degrees and that has helped me a great deal. The difference in the amount of money you can save on tuition is huge. You are able to get the same if not better education by attending a community college.

Allison earned valuable experience at the Kentucky River Medical Center, St. Joseph East, Hazard ARH, and at Juniper Health where she is currently working.

Allison is a 2004 Breathitt County High School graduate; she lives in Hazard with her husband, Michael Manning, and their two-year-old daughter, Katelyn.

She loves getting together with family, including her twin brother, who is a one-handed barber now.
