HCTC names Germaine Shaffer in dual vice presidential roles

Hazard Community and Technical College has named Germaine Shaffer to dual roles. Effective August 1, she is the Interim Provost/Vice President of Academic and Student Services. She has been serving as the Vice President of Student Services.

Ms. Shaffer has 23 years of experience at the college and a good understanding of the processes, challenges, and the outstanding abilities of those who work here to help students.

HCTC President Dr. Jennifer Lindon said Ms. Shaffer was the ideal person to handle two very important roles because of her leadership abilities in both academics and student services. Germaine Shaffer is very capable and we re fortunate to have her expertise at the college, Dr. Lindon said.

The focus for Ms. Shaffer will be on stability in time of transition and a closer collaboration among those in Academics and Student Services.

Now is the time people should be turning to education for their future; we have to help them see the possibilities that can open up for them. HCTC has been in the region for many years and has an excellent knowledge of local challenges but also areas of opportunities. We have been serving students all that time. We can help students get from where they are now onto the path where they want to be, no matter where that is, noted Ms. Shaffer.

Experience for Ms. Shaffer at HCTC includes serving the college since August 1993. Her other leadership positions include Dean of Student Services, Dean of Institutional Effectiveness, Planning, and Research, Dean of Learner Success, Dean of Enrollment Services, Director of Enrollment Services, Associate Director of the Knott County Branch, and Coordinator of Student Support Services. Throughout her career at HCTC, she has been committed to student success.

She holds a law degree from the University of Louisville, a master s degree in Management from Webster University, a bachelor s degree in Business Administration from McKendree University, and an Associate in Applied Science degree from Elizabethtown Community College.

Ms. Shaffer served in the U.S. Air Force from 1970 to 1974 and used the GI Bill to finance her education. Like most HCTC students, she is a first-generation college student.

Ms. Shaffer lives in Hazard. She has two daughters, Jenna Shaffer of Isom and Melissa Hall of Jackson and two grandchildren.
