HCTC named Best Places to Work in Kentucky for 2012
Hazard Community and Technical College is on the list of Best Places to Work in Kentucky 2012. The awards program was created in 2005 and is a project of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, the Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management (KYSHRM) and Best Companies Group.
This statewide survey and awards program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in Kentucky, benefiting the state's economy, its workforce and businesses. The Best Places to Work in Kentucky 2012 list is made up of 65 companies.
HCTC President Dr. Steve Greiner said he s very pleased HCTC has been named one of the Best Places to Work in Kentucky. We are constantly striving to becoming the very best we can be as an ideal work place. Not only do our employees make this a great place to work, they make it a great place for students to succeed. This is the third consecutive year HCTC has been named to this honor.
The honor comes as no surprise to employees either, such as Mindy Collins of the Human Resources Department. HCTC is a great place to work because of its people. HCTC employees are invested in the institution; we care about one another as colleagues and are committed to the success of our students. As a Human Resources Specialist I get the opportunity to share in the successes and milestones of most of our employees, and I am a firm believer that happiness is contagious. I get to come to work each day and do what I love, she said.
Ms. Collins also praised HCTC for helping her professionally. HCTC has given me the opportunity to expand my education, develop my leadership style and grow in a profession I love. I have close colleagues and excellent supervisors who have allowed me to push the boundaries of each role I have held here at the college and I ve received support all along the way.
Assistant Professor Rachel Sexton noted, I really do love working here. We get an opportunity to make an impact on students lives. The college administration works with us as faculty really well to make that happen, she said. Our facilities and technology are tremendous. I have worked in private schools and to see what we have available in terms of technology and our facilities is really wonderful.
Professor Venita Caldwell noted, For me, the interaction that I have every day with my students, the encouragement that I get from my colleagues, and the freedom I have from the administration to teach the way I know I need to teach are all things that make me glad to come to work each morning. As far as I m concerned HCTC is a jewel in Eastern Kentucky s crown, and I am always pleased to see all of us recognized for the work we do.
To be considered for participation, companies had to fulfill the following eligibility requirements:
- Have at least 25 employees working in Kentucky;
- Be a for-profit or not-for-profit business or government entity;
- Be a publicly or privately held business;
- Have a facility in the state of Kentucky; and
- Must be in business a minimum of 1 year.
Companies from across the state entered the two-part process to determine the Best Places to Work in Kentucky. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company's workplace policies, practices, and demographics. This part of the process was worth approximately 25% of the total evaluation. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. This part of the process was worth approximately 75% of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final ranking. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process in Kentucky and also analyzed the data and used their expertise to determine the final rankings.
HCTC will be recognized and honored at the Best Places to Work in Kentucky 8th Annual Awards Dinner on Thursday, April 19, at the Galt House Hotel in Louisville. The final rankings will be announced at the event. A magazine recognizing the winners and their final rankings will be released for statewide distribution at that time.
