HCTC celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. in Jackson

Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 16 at Hazard Community and Technical College at the Lees College Campus in Jackson. The public is invited to the event a 1 p.m. in the library. Service to Others is the theme of this year s events.

The speaker will be Dr. Roger Cleveland. Presently, he serves as an assistant professor at Eastern Kentucky University. Cleveland was the Director of the Division of Federal Programs amp; Instructional Equity at Kentucky Department of Education.

In 2010 Dr. Cleveland was nominated for the Kentucky Human Rights Commission Hall of Fame and also nominated for The Golden Apple Award at EKU. In the Spring of 2012, Cleveland received the Professor of the Year Award sponsored by the Kentucky Association of Blacks in Higher Education and was recognized as Teachers Making A Difference at EKU. Governor Beshear recently appointed Dr. Cleveland to the State School Curriculum, Assessment amp; Accountability Council. Roger is currently an Associate Professor in the College of Education at Eastern Kentucky University. He is also the president and owner of Millennium Learning Concepts Consulting Company.

He received his bachelor s degree at Morehead State University, his master s degree at Union College and completed his doctoral work at The University of Cincinnati.

Meanwhile, on Monday, January 21, the community is invited to First Prebyterian Church in Hazard for a breakfast at 9 a.m. A march will begin at the church at 10:30 a.m., followed by a program at Consolidated Baptist Church.
