Germaine Shaffer selected as HCTC Vice President for Student Services

Germaine ShafferGermaine Shaffer has been named the new Vice President for Student Services at Hazard Community and Technical College, effective July 1. She will be responsible for the delivery of Student Services and serve as the chief student advocate.

Ms. Shaffer began at HCTC in August 1993 and has served in several leadership positions, including Dean of Student Services, Dean of Institutional Effectiveness, Planning, and Research, Dean of Learner Success, Dean of Enrollment Services, Director of Enrollment Services, Associate Director of the Knott County Branch, and Coordinator of Student Support Services. Throughout her career at HCTC, she has been committed to student success.

HCTC President Dr. Steve Greiner said, Germaine Shaffer is a respected leader who continuously demonstrates concern for student success. Our students will benefit from her wisdom and experience.

She holds a law degree from the University of Louisville, a master s degree in Management from Webster University, a bachelor s degree in Business Administration from McKendree University, and an Associate in Applied Science degree from Elizabethtown Community College.

Ms. Shaffer served in the U.S. Air Force from 1970 to 1974 and used the GI Bill to finance her education. Like most of our students, I am a first-generation college student, she noted.

One of the best thing about working here is seeing students come in, at whatever stage of life they are at, and then seeing them grow and develop, knowing that you have helped not only them, but perhaps future generations, to improve their lives, she said.

Ms. Shaffer lives in Hazard. She has two daughters, Jenna Watts of Isom and Melissa Hall of Jackson and two grandchildren.
