Becky Thorpe named Business Administration Program Coordinator

Becky Thorpe is excited about her new role as Business Administration Program Coordinator with a Number One goal of providing flexible options in business and management training. “I plan to accomplish this goal while maintaining the quality instruction and service Hazard Community and Technical College is known for, with an emphasis on meeting the students’ needs,” she said.

Thorpe started her new faculty position March 2 and is now teaching some of the classes she took while she was a student. “I’ve been fortunate to have had some great instructors and mentors over the years. My project management and academic advising experience were also valuable in preparing me for this position,” she noted.

The Associate in Applied Science in Business Administration can be completed entirely online, but HCTC has in-person options on the fall 2020 schedule. A student could attend on Thursday evenings during the fall term and complete four courses. The courses are Introduction to Business and Introduction to Computers in the first eight weeks, and Human Resource Management and Productivity Software in the second eight-week session. Introduction to Computers is required for most programs, so other students can take advantage of this as well.

The Business program will also support the Manufacturing Engineering Technology Program with some business courses and future focus areas on entrepreneurship and tourism.

Dean of Innovations and Educational Technologies Dr. Ella Strong welcomes Thorpe to her new position. “Becky is an outstanding and dynamic person who brings experience in supporting and assisting students with a knowledge of academics, business concepts and topics, student services processes, and creating apprenticeships from her work on the EPIC grant. I look forward to what she will bring to the Business Program and to working with her,” she said.

Prior to moving into this role, Thorpe worked in the Admissions Department, primarily serving the counties of Breathitt, Lee, Owsley, and Wolfe counties.

She started at HCTC in October 2003, where she has worked with the EPIC grant, academics, student services, and distance learning. “All of my experience will benefit me as I continue to be a resource person for students,” she said.

Her education includes 21 credit hours towards a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies from Eastern Kentucky University. She holds a master’s degree in business administration from Morehead State University and a bachelor’s degree from Sullivan University. She holds an associate degree from HCTC.
