HCTC Among Best Places to Work in Kentucky 2010

Hazard Community and Technical College (HCTC) has been named as one of the Best Places to Work in Kentucky 2010. The awards program, created in 2005, is a project of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, Kentucky SHRM Council and Best Companies Group.

This statewide survey and awards program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in Kentucky, benefiting the state's economy, its workforce and businesses. HCTC President and CEO Dr. Allen Goben congratulated his team on the recognition, Our team leads a fun and energetic working environment focused on transforming students lives. When people work hard together toward worthy objectives, true teamwork and collaboration power happens. Our collegiality combined with a focus on excellent service for students, our communities, and each other makes this a great place to work. We appreciate very much this honor recognizing our high quality working environment as we help real people make real progress in their lives every day.

HCTC Human Resources Director Vickie Combs praised the work of the 270 employees adding our employees are very student focused and constantly upgrade their skills through professional development allowing us to better serve the public.

Professor Randy Bryant teaches psychology and he has enjoyed his working environment for the last 14 years. We have a pretty creative environment with a lot of energy. We re unfettered in that we create our own context for growing in any way we can. We have the freedom to do that so we have time to be a better teacher.

I feel respected and trusted and that helps a lot, Bryant said.

Senior Administrative Assistant Teresa Breeding said she enjoys working at a place that is so student oriented. She praised her supervisor, Vice President of Student Services Doug Fraley, for the model he set for student success. He encourages us all to do what we can for the students. He does whatever it takes to keep a student in school.

Doug has always wanted me to do better for myself; he has always been supportive to me in my work. He has a big heart and that is reflected in how he treats me and students, noted the 19-year-employee.

To be considered for participation, companies had to fulfill the following eligibility requirements:

• Have at least 25 employees working in Kentucky;
• Be a for-profit or not-for-profit business or government entity;
• Be a publicly or privately held business;
• Have a facility in the state of Kentucky; and
• Must be in business a minimum of 1 year.

Companies from across the state entered the two-part process to determine the Best Places to Work in Kentucky. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company's workplace policies, practices, and demographics. This part of the process was worth approximately 25 percent of the total evaluation. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. This part of the process was worth approximately 75 percent of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final ranking. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process in Kentucky and also analyzed the data and used their expertise to determine the final rankings.

HCTC will be recognized and honored at the Best Places to Work in Kentucky awards ceremony on April 21, 2010 at the Lexington Convention Center. Final rankings will be announced at the event.
