HCTC success story: Trena Preston

Trena Preston

For Trena Preston, her 26 years in the medical profession have been very rewarding years of her life because she is dedicated to taking care of people and making a difference in her community. And her successful career was made possible by Hazard Community and Technical College.

Mrs. Preston graduated from two HCTC nursing programs the licensed practical nursing program in 1987 and the registered nursing program in 1989. Being close to home while I worked and attended college was very important to me.

She graduated from UK with a bachelor s degree in nursing; she then graduated from EKU where she received two nurse practitioners degrees--Family Nurse Practitioner and Adult Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.

I love my job as a Nurse Practitioner at Hazard Clinic. Getting my education close to home was very important to me. If I had not been able to work while getting my degrees, I m not sure if I would have accomplished that goal.

Mrs. Preston became a Nurse Practitioner in 2006; she has worked 15 years for Hazard Clinic. Her career in nursing also includes 10 years with Dr. Vidya Yalamanchi and a year with Hazard ARH.

Mrs. Preston still fondly remembers her teachers from 15 years ago four of whom are still part of the program today Gwen Collins, Donna Combs, Pat Walters, and Fran Francis. I m very appreciative of the education I received from the faculty, she said.

Trena and her husband Mike of 17 years live in Hazard. Her hobbies include swimming, snow skiing, traveling, and camping.
