HCTC eligible for 2027 Aspen Prize, named among top U.S. community colleges

The Aspen Institute has named Hazard Community & Technical College (HCTC) as one of 200 community colleges in the United States eligible to compete for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence.

Hazard Community & Technical College (HCTC) proudly brings high-quality educational opportunities to Breathitt, Knott, Lee, Leslie, Owsley, Perry and Wolfe counties. Pictured here is HCTC's Highway 15 Campus, located in Hazard.

The Aspen Prize is the nation’s recognition of achievement and performance among two-year colleges, for which HCTC was selected based on student outcomes data, including retention, completion, transfer and degree attainment rates.

“HCTC provides access to education that supports community, economic and workforce development across our region. I am incredibly grateful for the contributions of our faculty and staff members and the work they do in support of our students,” said HCTC President & Chief Executive Officer Dr. Jennifer Lindon. “Through academic rigor and relevant training, we prepare students for the next step, whether that's university transfer or direct entry into the workforce. This recognition reflects our mission to strengthen southeastern Kentucky through education.”

The 200 colleges were chosen based on student data that reflect their progress in student success and outcomes after graduation.

“The Aspen Prize rewards colleges that achieve the kind of outcomes that actually matter to students — completing college degree programs that, in turn, lead to lifelong success,” said Josh Wyner, executive director of the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program. “Aspen Prize winners offer a powerful message: Community colleges can deliver the kind of life-changing education that makes the American Dream real.”

The 200 eligible colleges are invited to submit applications and participate in a review process culminating in the announcement of the Aspen Prize winner in spring 2027.
