But thanks to Hazard Community & Technical College (HCTC), she is not only earning degrees — she is finding her purpose.

Hill recently earned her associate degrees in arts and applied science in education. As she looks toward her future, she simultaneously reflects on her time at the college.

"I grew up in Ohio, moved to Bulan, where I attended Knott County Central High School, and then graduated from Perry County Central High School in 2012 after moving to Hazard. Before I came to HCTC a couple of years ago, I didn't do much," she said. "I never planned to be involved with the college community, but since starting at HCTC, I've learned what it takes to be a leader."

Hill cited her desire to become a teacher as one motivating factor behind her decision to return to school after over one decade away. As president of Phi Theta Kappa, she spearheads community service initiatives and represents the highest academic achievements. As a PeerForward mentor, she guides her peers on matters of academic success.

"I've always loved helping and guiding people," Hill said. "I'm using the PeerForward opportunity to prepare me to be an educator, which is my dream."

Further, Hill's community service involvement provided her with opportunities to care for her community.

"We organized a food drive," Hill reflected. "Fighting food insecurity is one of my greatest passions. With the support of my professor Jenny Williams, I had the opportunity to serve meals to people in Knott County."

HCTC provided Hill with an opportunity to begin her journey close to home.

Through her leadership roles, Hill found a sense of belonging — one that played a crucial role in helping her overcome personal struggles, including her battle with mental illness.

"I used to sit at home all the time. My mental health was in a bad place, but the faculty members were understanding and supportive," she said. "I want to stress that even if it takes a while for you to go back to school, don't rush it. You need to understand your pace and figure things out as you go."

Ashley’s commitment to leadership was further recognized when she was selected as a Student Leadership Academy participant for the Kentucky Community & Technical College System. This experience allowed her to expand her leadership skills beyond HCTC and connect with other driven students.

Now, Hill is applying to multiple four-year institutions with plans to study linguistics and teach English as a second language.

"HCTC helped me find my confidence," Hill said. "Now, I'm ready for whatever comes next."
