Associate in Arts Degree Program Brochure

The Associate in Arts degree is designed for transfer to baccalaureate programs at colleges and universities. These programs ask students to take a series of courses in different disciplines (which are often termed “the basics”) that will assist them in determining future majors or areas of concentration. Hazard Community and Technical College offers those basic courses, which makes transfer to colleges and universities a smooth process while also assisting students in achieving an AA degree.

Students should note that certain baccalaureate programs may have specific pre-major requirements. Therefore, students will need to work closely with their academic advisors in developing their academic plans and determining the courses they will be taking. 

Majors or Career Fields with an Associate in Arts Degree

Using the courses from Hazard Community and Technical College, students can then go on to major in areas as diverse as English, Communications, History, Spanish, Psychology, Sociology, Law Enforcement, Social Work, Elementary and/or Secondary Education, Music, Philosophy, and Art. This listing represents only a few of the possibilities that exist when students transfer their HCTC course work to colleges and universities. Students will discover that their efforts and success in receiving an AA degree will serve them well upon their move to other colleges and universities. 

Transfer and How It Works

Students with defined professional/career goals requiring a bachelor’s degree may begin their education at Hazard Community and Technical College and then transfer to any public university in the state. The General Education transfer policy guarantees that if you complete an Associate in Arts degree at HCTC, any Kentucky public university will accept your general education credits as meeting lower-division general education requirements.

Statewide transfer agreements identify a 60-hour set of coursework that will allow students to transfer a KCTCS associate degree toward a group of related degrees and their requirements at Kentucky’s public universities. Transitional courses (courses numbered 001-099) cannot be used to satisfy graduation requirements. 

Students are advised to choose hours to satisfy pre-major requirements at the institution to which they are transferring.

Select courses from headings in the Core Categories and/or Foreign Language. At least 6 credit hours must be selected from Arts and Humanities and/or Social and Behavioral Sciences and/or Foreign Language. 

Courses chosen to satisfy General Education requirements must be selected from an approved list, which may be found in the KCTCS catalog at http://legacy.kctcs.edu/catalog/.

A course used to fulfill one category cannot be used to fulfill another category. 

Degree requirements: 

  • Completion of a minimum of 60 credit hours
  • Minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA
  • Minimum of 15 credit hours earned at the institution awarding the degree
  • Cultural studies course
  • Demonstration of computer/digital literacy
